Over 5,000 people came to Valentine Sports Park, Glenwood, NSW over the weekend, Sat 7th & Sun 8th October 2017, to Super Sikhs Cup to participate and watch the biggest participated annual South Asian sports festival in NSW.

The festival engaged a record number of 800 participants over nine sports, which is an increase of 300 participants from 2016, with over 25% of the participants being female. The participation growth areas was supported with the introduction of Women’s Basketball, Netball Fast5 and AFL 9’s Formats to the Sports Festival.

The nine sports that featured included Cricket, Soccer, Netball, Volleyball, Touch Footy, AFL, Kabaddi, Basketball and Athletics.

The Super Sikhs Cup sports festival was organised by the Super Sikhs Sports and Cultural Association and spokesperson Dr Balraj Ougra said “The Super Sikhs Cup in it’s 5th year has evolved and gone strength to strength every year, with a huge focus in the last 12 months to work on increasing female participation numbers in sport.”

“The Sports Festival provided a platform for athletes, officials and volunteers to showcase their talent to the wider community whilst enjoying a world class facility at Valentine Sports Park.”

In addition to the Sports Festival guests in attendance included Rupinder Kaur, Australian Commonwealth Games Athlete, Honourable Kevin Conolly, State MP Riverstone, Honourable Ray William, State MP Castle Hill & Minister Multiculturalism, and Honourable Michelle Rowland, Federal MP Greenway.

MP Ray Williams from NSW Government said “It was a pleasure to attend the 5th annual Super Sikhs Cup on Sunday, in what has become a major cultural sporting event for our communities in Western Sydney”.

The Sports Festival included a Charity Kabaddi match which initiated many retired veteran athletes to make a return to raise funds for a community project. The match was a fun spectacle and raised over $2,000 for Khalsa Aid, an international Humanitarian Aid organisation.

Alongside an increase in female participation numbers, cultural diversity was on the rise with the festivals open door participation policy, welcoming teams from all communities and heritages.
